VANCOUVER MODEL UN

Four years ago, Jackson Spencer, a member of my first Social Justice class, suggested we should participate in the Vancouver Model UN.  I didn't even know what it was, so I investigated and decided he was right, and we should get involved!  This conference creates a mock United Nations, very similar to the real one in New York City, and allows students from schools as far away as California, Newfoundland, New York, Toronto and the entire province of BC, to debate real-world issues in a professional, international atmosphere.

So here we are, four years later.  VMUN is bigger and better, and our delegations have grown from just 12 students to over 40.  This three-day event, from January 30 to February 1, 2015,  is held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown, involves nearly 1000 high school students, and is a terrific, challenging and exciting learning experience.

Registration for VMUN has just opened.  I would like to invite you to a meeting this coming Tuesday, October 28th at 3 p.m. in D102, to find out more about VMUN and why YOU might want to participate in this exciting student conference.  You can also check out their website at http://vmun.com/.

Part of our Social Justice curriculum is to participate in the model UN.  I will expect all of you to register with the Sutherland delegation, unless you have extenuating circumstances.  I hope to receive PAC money to reduce our registration fees, or to assist those who may not have the money to pay for themselves.  If you cannot make the meeting on Tuesday, we will be talking about VMUN on Thursday at our regular class this week.

By the way, Jackson has gone on to head his delegation in model UN conferences at Carleton University!
