Social Justice advocates!  Your assignment for October 2nd, 2014, is to plan and cook a dish that would be eaten somewhere in the Global South.  Bring enough of your special food to class for everyone (34) to have a spoonful.

1.  To accomplish this task, you must first FIND OUT WHAT GLOBAL SOUTH MEANS.  Follow the link below for a reasonable summary, but be bold and look at more sources, too. (be prepared to list your URLs from your research on your handout.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North%E2%80%93South_divide

2.  Next, FIND OUT WHAT ANY OF THE COUNTRIES/REGIONS belonging to the Global South EAT on a regular basis, and how much of it is available to any ordinary citizen at any given time.  Do a bit of research into the nutritional value of the food, its local cost to a person living in that region, etc.

3.  Then, see if you can FIND some of that food, find a way to COOK it in an authentic way, and BRING IT TO CLASS NEXT THURSDAY.

4.  Everyone will be expected to PRESENT A RATIONALE (explanation for why you chose it) for their choice of food.

Finally, think about this question:
What did you learn in this exercise that pertains to social justice?

HOMEWORK:  PREPARE a ONE-PAGE handout for your classmates, including:
(this must be done on computer, be available electronically to send to Ms. B, and you must have a printed copy for the class)
  • A RATIONALE/BACKGROUND FOR YOUR CHOICE
  • A MAP of the region
  • A DESCRIPTION OF YOUR FOOD, AND HOW YOU PREPARED IT
  • WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH SOCIAL JUSTICE
  • INCLUDE URL LINKS FOR ALL SITES YOU CONSULTED IN THIS EXERCISE
We will be sharing our Global South Picnic during class, from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, October 2nd.  Bring your dish to Ms. B and I will store it for the day for you.  If we need to warm anything, we can do so just before we eat.
